A few more facts about Ultherapy

Ultherapy is a new type of non-surgical procedure for the face that stimulates the body’s own natural healing process to lift the skin over time. The use of FDA-cleared ultrasound technology enables physicians, for the first time, to see and then treat the deepest support layers of the skin.  This approach allows for the same results typically addressed in cosmetic surgery – without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin.

With just one Ultherapy treatment at our Park Avenue Plastic Surgery Suite; and the lifting process is initiated. The effect, however will build gradually over the course of two to three months, as new, stronger collagen is created.  Further improvements can even appear up to six months following a single Ultherapy procedure as the collagen-building process continues.

It seems to me that there is a trend for prospective patients to choose which doctor they want to consult on the basis of price. Many who inquire through the internet ask about the price mainly and not about the quality or experience. This may be a huge mistake. If you have your plastic surgery for cheap and you have poor results you will spend more money and will have much aggravation to try to fix it. It is also a fact that even if it is fixed it is never as good as it would have been if you had it done right the first time, not to mention how much more it costs you now with a less than optimal result. One should also take into account the time spent looking for a doctor to fix it as by now you have become fearful of what may occur. Cheap means that the surgeon is cutting cost somewhere and it is usually on things used in your treatment. If the doctor got paid his/hers usual fee he/she may use better drugs for anesthesia that make you less nauseous or different sutures or merely would take more time with your case. There are certain expenses the doctor has and if his pay is low he has to skimp on something to make a profit. Be careful when it comes to your health. This is not where you want to save money and sacrifice quality. You get what you pay for.www.colenmd.comwww.facebook.com/colenmdwww.twitter.com/colenmdcosmetic

Your health after breast implants, what to watch for
I am sure many women are aware that there was a statement released by the FDA regarding a very rare form of non Hodgkins lymphoma found in some patients with breast implants. It is so rare that most plastic surgeons have never seen a case in spite of a huge number of implants being inserted for both reconstructive and cosmetic reasons.
The cause of this rare cancer is not known. Was it there before and only became manifested after the area was exposed to the implant? Which type of implant is associated with it-silicone or saline? Rough surface or smooth surface of the bag holding the silicone or saline? Placement of the implant - under breast tissue or under muscle?  Some evidence points to the fact that it may occur mainly in rough coated implants inserted mainly under breast tissue. However, it is so rare that it is very hard to draw any conclusions. The good news is that this lymphoma acts like the lymphoma of skin. It does not spread and is cured with removal of implant and excision of the capsule. No other treatment seems to be necessary.  It is also speculated that should this condition occur it would not be advised to reinsert the same or a new implant and it would be best to remove the implant of the unaffected breast with its capsule as well.  Of course these patients have to be followed and examined to make sure that indeed it will not recur and all evidence points to that effect.
What symptoms does the lymphoma present itself with? Usually occurrence of fluid around the implant with hardness and discomfort. This occurs late after implants were inserted usually anywhere from 6 months to many years later.
So what should you do after you had implants inserted? If you experience a late onset of swelling due to fluid around the implant with accompanying hardness see your doctor who should send the fluid from around the implant for analysis.  Most likely the analysis will be benign and a routine treatment of capsule contracture is done. Should the cytology be positive for ALCL-the lymphoma-then the implant and capsule should be removed and you will be fine.  I am writing this so that you are all aware of this condition.
Now that you are well informed, enjoy your implants but always be vigilant of any symptoms you may experience.  That of course pertains to any health symptoms not only those associated with implants. When in doubt always check it out.

Trimming and Wedging: Two More Labiaplasty Techniques in New York Labiaplasty

Colen MD Plastic Surgery

Recently, I’ve been telling you about several different labiaplasty techniques that various plastic surgeons perform, depending on their own expertise and on the needs of their patients. We’ll conclude with two lesser-used techniques:  the trim and the wedge.

The surgeon uses the trim method to trim the length and size of the patient’s inner lips (the “labia minora”).  During this procedure, the plastic surgeon removes the edge strip of skin which runs along each of the labia minora.  This procedure is done for patients who express discontent with the discoloration, pigment  or roughness of the inner labia. The trim helps restore the labia to a more pleasing color and relieves some of the roughness. Even though this sounds like a benefit (and for most, it is), this maybe actually a drawback for some patients. Since the trim gets rid of the labia minora’s rough outer edge, if it is overdone it has the potential of making the labia look too smooth hence artificial. The new edge should not appear unnaturally smooth. However even though some women think that lips should not be “too smooth” as smooth appearance is unappealing, others, though, consider it a dream come true—much as a person who has the Hollywood model’s figure might enjoy having that too-good-to-be-true body. Regardless, many plastic surgeons can recreate the rogation in order to preserve a more natural appearance.

The trim can be done by itself or else used in conjunction with a procedure known as a clitoral hood reduction. Since the trim runs down and up the length of the patient’s labia minora, the surgeon can easily do both procedures with one incision. By doing so, she reduces trauma for the patient and increases her ability to recover quickly and have increased sensation.

Finally, let’s consider the wedge technique. With the wedge, the surgeon removes excess tissue, but does so using a different pattern from the trim. In the wedge technique, a wedge-shaped section of tissue is surgically removed. After this, the labia’s innter lips are sewn together, thus forming a smaller profile. The purpose of the wedge is it allows the labia to be reduced without the need to cut off the outer edge. This allows patient and surgeon to retain the inner lip’s natural edge.

One advantage of this technique is that the resulting scar will not run the length of the patient’s labia. However, there is a greater risk of the wound reopening than there is with the trim technique. Speak with your surgeon about which procedure would be best in your situation.

Reduction of the Female Labia Majora Labiaplasty

Not all labiaplasty procedures are the same. In fact, when we speak of labiaplasty, we’re actually talking about one of several different techniques. The actual technique that you undergo will vary according to your needs and according to the plastic surgeon that you’ve hired. One of the most common techniques is the reduction of the female labia majora. Let’s take a closer look at it.

The Labia Majora Reduction is a technique that is nicely suited for the woman who feels that labia majora (the outer lips of the vagina area) are overly puffy or fatty. This excessive puffiness can be chaused by childbirth, sudden weight gain and loss, or even by genetics. One possible result of enlarged labia majora is a trapping of moisture, which in turn causes skin irritation. Many women who experience yeast infection can trace it back to this fatty condition.

One way that a surgeon moves this excess fat is through liposuction. The name says it all: liposuction is simply the use of suction to remove fat from under the skin. Liposuction in a labiaplasty causes the labia to appear more attractive and streamlined. Sometimes a mons pubis reduction will help, as well. This is because the labia majora and mons pubis are connected, and sometimes, if we change one, we must change the other, so as to avoid the appearance of a visual imbalance.

Sometimes, though, liposuction might not work well. In this case, we might opt for labia excision, in which we remove portions of the outer lips in order to tighten any wrinkled and / or loose skin. When the surgeon opts for labia excision, she actually hides the incision in the valley between the patient’s labia minora and labia majora. It presereves the woman’s looks and genital sensation, and leaves no external scars.

And then there’s augmentation. The plastic surgeon and patient might choose this when the lips appear atrophic and too wrong, or insufficiently full. In augmentation, we cut away any excess hanging tissue and we inject a filler (often fat), in order to achieve fuller outer lips.

Deciding if reduction of the labia is right for your situation will require a consultation between you and your plastic surgeon. However, if you have any general questions about this technique, feel free to contact me, and I’ll be

How Celebrities Get Red Carpet Ready

This weekend was filled with the celebration of musical talent. Last night, the Grammy’s took place. Musicians, movie stars, and celebrities of all types showed up to pay homage to those who grace this world with their musical talents. For weeks to come, the tabloids are abuzz with “Who will win?”, “What will she wear?”, and “What song will they perform?”. Once all questions are answered after the show, we are all left with one burning question, “How did SHE look so good!?”.

Hollywood has it’s aging process backwards. The young look older and the old look younger. And both leave you saying “She’s how old?!”. The older women who walk the red carpet and have the world begging for access to their fountain of youth often use more than just makeup and a pretty dress to get them red carpet ready. A lot of celebrities use noninvasive cosmetic procedures done just before the big day in order to have that young, vibrant skin.

One of these treatments is Botox. Botox is commonly used to reduce or eliminate the appearance of facial wrinkles. Botox injections are safe and results are usually seen in 4-5 days. Dramatic changes in forehead lines and wrinkles as well as lines around the eyes “crow’s feet” are consistently achieved. When injected properly a chemical brow lift can be accomplished. The results last for approximately four months. Botox can also be used to treat the lines around the mouth, the folds in the neck, excessive sweating, Migraine headaches, and eye and neck muscle spasms.

Also on the list of noninvasive treatments that celebrities use are fillers. Fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Radiesse, can be injected into lines and wrinkles, as well as depressions from acne scars. They are useful to enhance the contour and size of the lips. They are all well tolerated and the results are immediate. They last for four months to five years depending on the product selected.

Chemical Peels are one of many non-invasive facial rejuvenation procedures available to improve the quality of your skin. Having healthy, glowing, flawless skin is something everyone desires, but few are naturally born with. Chemical Peels can improve a number of surface skin issues including acne scars, sun damage, fine lines, and wrinkles.

Should I Get Breast Implants? -xoJane.com

It started a few months ago, when a fashion publicist friend revealed that she had her breasts enlarged as a teenager. We’ve known each other for nearly three years, and I never noticed her cup size, or thought that it may have been surgically enhanced. A beautiful, effortless, native New Yorker, she just doesn’t look like the “boob job” type.

For some reason, breast augmentation still carries a stigma, especially in the fashion world. As my publicist friend told me after finally admitting that she’d had hers done, “Half the battle is hiding them forever.” That sounds ominous, but once I learned that breast implants could actually pass, as hers do, I couldn’t stop thinking about them.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the benefits of being curve-free — running for miles without back pain, going braless, having people look me in the eye — you get the idea. But I’m still preoccupied by this equation that Cat once wrote about, “a terrible little math problem multiplying and dividing forever in your head that equates rather exactingly your own hotness with the rest of the world’s ability to love you.” I calculate my cup size and it disrupts the sum…

Buttock Augmentations on the Rise

Who has the most famous booty in Hollywood? That is the one million dollar question. One of the most infamous butts in all the land is none other than Jennifer Lopez. The American Idol judge brought her asset to the attention of all the world when she released her debut album, ‘On The 6’, in 1999. The booty obsession was all “uphill” from there.

Currently, people are starting to request these butts from plastic surgeons. Recent studies from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery show that Americans spent over $31 million on buttock augmentation surgeries in 2010. That is a 40 percent increase from 2009. This trend coincides with the recent rise to fame of Kim Kardashian and the comeback of Jennifer Lopez. People are also requesting buttock shapes similar to Salma Hayek, and, more recently, Pippa Middleton.

If it is one thing that plastic surgeons suggest when deciding size and shape it is to consider proportions. The type of buttock augmentation should depend on your body type. Make sure to consult with your surgeon about what would look best with your body, instead of just the behind you want to emulate.

Also, choose your surgeon carefully and do not try to take shortcuts. If a procedure sounds fishy, it probably is. Recently, a woman in Florida charged people $700 for buttock injections. She claimed that these injections would give the extra boost that women want. What was in these injections? Fix-A-Flat, a tire inflator and sealant.

In another disturbing story, a Colombian couple gave “buttock augmentations” in the back of a tile shop resulting in the death of one. They are both serving jail sentences.

Reese Witherspoon talks plastic surgery

Reese Witherspoon was recently quoted saying that she’s neither for nor against plastic surgery. She said, “I have plenty of friends who do stuff and if it makes you feel good, great … but I don’t think it’s the fix for some sort of unease that you’re having about who you are as a human being.” Claiming that she doesn’t need plastic surgery…yet. Reese’s view on plastic surgery is one that many people share. Everybody is entitled to do how they please, and if it makes them happy, then why not? Everyone has their insecurities whether it be physical appearance or not. Some people choose to enhance their breasts with a new bra. Other people take a different route with surgery. All in all, it’s personal choice and we all have our opinions. And just because you may not want it now, doesn’t mean you won’t have a change of heart in the future. Like Reese says, “I don’t think I need plastic surgery at this point: Can we just go day-by-day on that one?”Google+

Happy New Month!

It’s February 1st, only a month into 2012. For some of us, 2012 was going to be THE ONE. Go big or go home. We set our new years resolutions to lose weight, work harder, be kinder, stop smoking, and to eat healthier. By now, most of us have lost sight of our ambitions. Somehow life caught up and you’re too busy to work out, too tired to work harder, too emotional to be kinder, too stressed to stop smoking, and just too hungry to eat healthier.

But don’t let a simple failed New Year’s resolution get you down! Statistics show that only 8% actually succeed in their resolution. That makes you a part of 92% that don’t make it. You may ask yourself why that number is so high, but the real question lies in why do we make resolutions at all? Do we set ourselves up for failure? Or do we honestly believe that we are going to follow through and be happy with our selves?

Most resolutions are made to make us feel better about who we are. We get it stuck in our stubborn minds that simply making a resolution will make it come true. We plan our workouts, eating habits, and daily routines around what we want to be. Our fridge is stocked with celery, our nicotine patch pressed on our arms as our feet hit the treadmill. It all seems easy until…it gets hard. The workouts take up too much time, the need for a cigarette is just too daunting, and healthy food doesn’t satisfy those cravings. Suddenly we lose sight of what we wanted because it is so much easier to stay who we are rather than to make those changes.

But all in all, as the days go on, we’ll revisit our past ambitions. Your mind will be abuzz with all the good ideas that you had before but now think they’re new again. The unhealthy food will be thrown away, new gym attire will fill your closet and your heart will be consumed with all the right intentions. And when this time comes around, do something new. Become one of the 8%. No one ever said it had to be a new year in order to make a change. All we need is a day. So make your new day’s resolution and stick to it because you deserve it. Nobody said it was easy, just worth it.
